The second book of the Old Testament is called Exodus which means departure or going out because it begins with the story of the children of Israel going out of Egypt. This was the forming of Israel into a new nation. Remember means to bring to mind; to recall; to be guided by an act or in accordance with something. Exodus 2:24 says, “And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
We remember things in our life that have been meaningful to us. As children, we remember the shows that helped us learn. For some that was Sesame Street and Barney. We remember the Dr. Zeus books that helped us to learn: The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham and Sam I am and for the young people the Bernstein Bears. We remember the TV shows, for those who liked the cowboy flicks there was Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Hop-A-Long Cassidy. And dare I do not say the songs that we remember by Smokey Robinson, James Brown, the Drifters, and Martha and the Vandellas. The memories can evoke a sense of comfort.
We even date significant times in our life by what music was playing on the air and what ball team won the championship in a particular year. We remember people who play a significant role in our success in life. We remember people who have been there for us who stood by us; people who prayed for us, cried with us and laughed with us.
God miraculously delivered the children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt. Exodus 13:3 says to remember the Lord and what He did for you. God wanted Israel to remember the great thing He had done for them. He wanted to protect and provide for this nation. If they knew how powerful He was, they would trust Him when obstacles and difficulties arose in their lives. Consequently, the nation of Israel would have a new vision for the future, because without a vision the people perish.
I Chronicles 16:12 says, “Remember His marvelous works that He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth.” As we must remember what God has done for us, we can trust him when we have problems in our life. Problems will come, but we have an advocate in the Lord Jesus Christ who helps us to remember that we are created in God’s image. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. We remember that we are blessed and if He did it before, He can do it again.
